Square Reader Arrives

Back on October 21, we wrote about the newest personal credit card reader named Square. Just in case you missed it, Square is an app for mobile phones and limited portable devices that allows you to accept credit card payments for anything.

Up until today, we were only able to manually enter charges using the keypad (which costs 3.5% + 15¢ per transaction). It worked well, but was a little buggy when not on WiFi or 3G. I could probably lay that blame on my iPhone 3G with the 4.0 software update – nothing seems to work quickly anymore.

Well, now we don’t have to worry about the manual method any longer! After receiving the “Your Square card reader has shipped” email on November 2, we now have the reader and it only took a day!

The packaging was a simple padded white envelope and it contained the reader with protective clear plastic and two other things, which turned out to be stickers. I wish I had taken a closer look before digging into the envelope because I wrinkled the stickers a bit. I’m sure they’ll be just fine.

So far in testing, it has worked well. The swiping takes a little getting used to, but the on-screen notifications tell you if you swiped too fast or if you need to try again. As you may guess, it is MUCH better than the manual method. The fees for the swiping method are 2.75% + 15¢ per transaction.

As for the reader, it seems to be made well. The thin side will move a little bit if you push on it, but it doesn’t have a lot of give. Apparently, this new version of the reader also includes a loop for a wrist strap or lanyard so you don’t lose it. I’d recommend getting some sort of small case or zip-able flash memory holder so you don’t misplace it.

Be careful when you have the reader inserted into the headphone jack on your phone. I see how it could be easy to break something if you aren’t careful. When setting it down on a flat surface it would be wise to put the fat part towards the top – otherwise the weight of the device (at least the iPhone 3G) will be placed on the reader. See photos below.

Pretty swipe…err sweet if you ask us! This seems to be the perfect credit card solution for any individual or small business. Especially when you are on site or don’t have an office to tie you down.

Let us know if and how you are using Square in the comments below!
